German Chancellor Merkel Has No Fears of Energy Dependence on Russia
17.07.2006 MosNews - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday, July 17, that her country has no fears about its dependence on energy supplies from Russia. Merkel was speaking at the international press center of the G8 summit in St. Petersburg. "It is true that today Germany and other European countries form their dependence on energy supplies from Russia and other countries. In the course of discussions at the G8 summit, the issue of relations between Russia and Germany, Russia and Europe in this sphere was not discussed," Merkel said, quoted by RIA Novosti. She added: "I have said numerous times that Russia, and before it the Soviet Union, has always been a reliable supplier." Despite its reliance on Russia as the energy supplier, Germany is currently considering the issue of diversification of its energy sources.
